I've Lived in France for More Than a Decade — and These Are the Best Places to Visit on the French Riviera

Having lived in France over a decade, I've discovered the best places on the French Riviera. Explore glamorous Nice with its vibrant markets, then relax on the stunning beaches of Cannes. Don't miss charming Eze village, perched high with breathtaking views. For art lovers, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a must-see. These travel tips ensure an unforgettable French vacation.

Beyond the Glitz: Unveiling the Riviera's True Gems

Many picture the French Riviera as simply Monaco casinos and luxury yachts. While those elements exist, the region is far richer in culture, history, and natural beauty than most realize. To truly experience it, you need to venture beyond the obvious tourist traps and discover the local villages, breathtaking landscapes, and the unique art scene that has flourished here for centuries.

Here's a breakdown of some of my favorite spots, moving westward along the coast:

Menton: A Lemon-Scented Paradise

Often overlooked in favor of its flashier neighbors, Menton is a charming border town with a distinctly Italian influence. Known as the "City of Lemons," Menton bursts with color and citrus groves. The old town, with its winding streets and pastel-colored buildings, is a joy to explore. Don't miss the Fête du Citron (Lemon Festival) held every February – it's a truly unique experience.

Èze: A Perched Village with Breathtaking Views

Perched high above the Mediterranean Sea, Èze is a medieval village that offers stunning panoramic views. Explore the exotic garden, filled with cacti and succulents from around the world, and wander through the charming artisan shops that line the narrow streets. While it can get crowded, especially during peak season, the views are well worth the effort. Consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds. Explore the Fragonard perfume factory and learn about the history of perfume making.

Nice: A Vibrant City with Art and History

Nice, the unofficial capital of the French Riviera, is a vibrant city that offers a blend of art, history, and modern amenities. Stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, a famous seaside boulevard, and admire the Belle Époque architecture. Explore the old town (Vieux Nice), with its colorful markets, lively restaurants, and hidden squares. Visit the Matisse Museum and the Marc Chagall National Museum to immerse yourself in the works of these famous artists who found inspiration in the Riviera's beauty. The Cours Saleya flower market is a must-see for its explosion of colors and fragrances.

Antibes: A Fortified Town with Artistic Heritage

Antibes boasts a rich history, dating back to Roman times. The fortified old town, with its ramparts and narrow streets, is a delight to explore. Visit the Picasso Museum, housed in the Château Grimaldi, where Picasso lived and worked for a short period. The Cap d'Antibes, a peninsula just south of Antibes, offers stunning coastal walks and secluded beaches. The Port Vauban, one of the largest marinas in Europe, is a sight to behold, especially for yacht enthusiasts.

Cannes: More Than Just a Film Festival

While Cannes is famous for its annual film festival, there's more to this city than just red carpets and celebrity sightings. Walk along La Croisette, the palm-lined promenade, and admire the luxury hotels and designer boutiques. Explore the Le Suquet, the old town, with its winding streets and panoramic views. Take a ferry to the Îles de Lérins, a group of islands just off the coast of Cannes, and explore the Lérins Abbey on Île Saint-Honorat.

Saint-Tropez: Iconic Glamour and Hidden Beaches

Saint-Tropez has long been associated with glamour and luxury, and while that image still holds true, the town also offers hidden beaches, charming squares, and a relaxed atmosphere. Explore the Place des Lices, where locals gather to play pétanque (boules). Visit the Musée de l'Annonciade, which houses a collection of modern art. And of course, don't miss the opportunity to relax on one of the many beaches, from the famous Pampelonne Beach to the more secluded coves.

Comparing the Riviera's Best Places:

Here is a chart that summarizes the highlights of each location:

No matter your travel style, the French Riviera has something to offer. So pack your bags, embrace the Riviera's charm, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure! Remember to book accommodations and tours in advance, especially during peak season.
