Meet South Africa's First Black Female Winemaker

Ntsiki Biyela, a trailblazer and innovator, shattered barriers to become South Africa's first Black female winemaker. Her journey, fueled by determination and passion, has transformed the landscape of the wine industry. Ntsiki’s award-winning Aslina Wines celebrates her grandmother and empowers other women, embodying resilience and crafting exceptional wines that represent a new chapter in South African winemaking, with a focus on sustainable practices.

From KwaZulu-Natal to the Vineyards of Stellenbosch

Born in Mahlabathini, a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal, Ntsiki's initial aspirations didn't involve winemaking. In fact, wine wasn't even a part of her upbringing. After high school, she was awarded a scholarship to study oenology at Stellenbosch University, an opportunity that would unexpectedly change the course of her life.

Despite facing cultural and linguistic barriers, Ntsiki excelled in her studies. She embraced the challenge of learning about viticulture, fermentation, and the art of blending. Her natural talent and dedication quickly became apparent, paving the way for her extraordinary career.

Aslina Wines: A Legacy in Every Bottle

In 2016, Ntsiki launched her own wine brand, Aslina Wines, named after her grandmother. This wasn't just a business venture; it was a tribute to the woman who instilled in her the values of hard work, resilience, and unwavering belief in oneself. Aslina Wines embodies these values, producing wines that are both elegant and expressive, reflecting the unique terroir of the Cape Winelands.

Aslina Wines offers a range of varietals, each crafted with meticulous attention to detail. From crisp Sauvignon Blanc to rich Cabernet Sauvignon, each bottle tells a story of dedication and passion. The brand's success is a testament to Ntsiki's skill as a winemaker and her ability to connect with consumers through her authentic story.

Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Change

Ntsiki's impact extends far beyond the vineyard. She is a role model for aspiring winemakers from disadvantaged backgrounds, proving that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. She actively mentors young talent, providing guidance and support to help them navigate the challenges of the industry.

Her journey has not been without its obstacles. Overcoming racial and gender biases required unwavering resilience and a commitment to proving her worth. Ntsiki's success has not only opened doors for herself but has also paved the way for greater diversity and inclusion within the South African wine industry.
