There are umpteen ways to get around the globe, but exploring a place by land gives you a glimpse of its cultural identity, its overlooked landscapes, and its people. Ground transportation can be as luxurious as a ride on the famous Orient Express or as casual as a bike ride along the cyclist-friendly streets of Amsterdam. You can travel by bus, by subway, by funicular, by cable car — or by golf cart or camel, for that matter. However you overland, traveling on the ground will get you places no plane or boat can.
